These exceptional antique George I Britannia standard *silver flagons have a plain tapering cylindrical form onto a spreading base.
The bodies of these impressive 18th century flagons are plain and unembellished, with plain applied moulded borders to the rims.
The flagons retain the original domed hinged covers and are each surmounted with an impressive silver finial and a scrolling thumbpiece.
Each hinge is decorated with pendant drop style ornamentation to the upper portion of the handle.
These antique flagons are fitted with hallmarked S scroll handles.
Such magnificent pairs of antique Georgian flagons, of this classic English style, are becoming increasingly difficult to locate and rare to the market.
NOTE: These flagons were previously advertised as Lot 199 in the 28th April 1977, Sotheby's London sale. The items were being sold from the collection of Lady Fairfax of Cameron.
* Britannia Silver - The Britannia silver standard of 958 (95.84% of fine silver), denoted by the icon of the seated Britannia holding an oval shield, was introduced by William III in 1697. This was to indicate the slightly higher standard of silver from sterling silver standard of 925 (92.5% of fine silver).
