Description

This antique Queen Anne Britannia standard silver* porringer has a circular rounded form.

The surface of this 18th century porringer is plain and unembellished.

This antique porringer is fitted with two S scroll handles.

The underside of the porringer bears the contemporary engraved initials 'GIM', in addition to the original engraved scratch weight of 7.2 troy ounces; as to be expected the measured weight has subtly diminished in keeping with age to 7 troy ounces.

This exceptional example of antique silverware has fine colour and patination**.

* Britannia Silver - The Britannia silver standard of 958 (95.84% of fine silver), denoted by the icon of the seated Britannia holding an oval shield, was introduced by William III in 1697. This was to indicate the slightly higher standard of silver from sterling silver standard of 925 (92.5% of fine silver).

** Patination or Patina is a subtle colouration or tarnish which forms on the surface of some metals, produced by oxidation or other chemical processes. A good patina proffers an aesthetically pleasing look.

Date: 1705

Condition

This antique porringer is an exceptional gauge of silver for its type, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

There are some natural fire marks as to be expected, in keeping with age.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the body are very clear in keeping with age; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of 18th century silverware.
