Burmese Silver Thabeik Bowl - Antique Circa 1880

£1,865.00

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Burmese silver thabeik bowl; an addition to our ornamental silverware collection

SKU A8582

This exceptional antique Burmese thabeik* silver bowl has a circular rounded form.

The surface of the bowl is embellished with fine panels of embossed and chased repoussé (repousse) decoration depicting a series of iconic Burmese figures in high relief, wearing courtly and traditional dress.

As with the vast majority of these bowls, the continuous frieze of figures relates to Burmese folklore.

Each frame of the decoration has a incurve border to the upper portion further accented with scrolling leaf ornamentation above.

The lower portion of the body is encircled with chased stylised leaf motifs.

The upper portion the body is ornamented with a broad band of chased scrolling undulating leaf decoration.

The body of the Burmese bowl is further embellished with a plain border to the rim.

The underside of the bowl is embellished with an engraved leaf design with a scrolling stem.

* The shape of the thabeik bowl is based on alms or begging bowls used by Burmese monks. Thabeik bowls however have no ceremonial or religious use; they are purely ornamental.
