Description

This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver and ceramic match striker has a globular form.

The ceramic body features a shield displaying an illustration of an open book with the Hebrew words 'Urim and Thummim', all on a Yale blue background*.

The upper portion of this antique match striker retains the original hallmarked sterling silver mount embellished with embossed scrolling leaf decoration.

Match strikers of this combination are highly collectable and rare to the market.

* This coat of arms pertains to Yale University. The Hebrew characters אורים ותמים (Urim V'Thummim) can be translated as 'Light and truth' or 'Lux et veritas' in Latin.

Condition

This antique match striker mount is a very good gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition in keeping with type and age.

The ceramic body is in perfect condition; there is some slight discoloration however this does not detract from the aesthetically pleasing appearance of the piece.

The embossed decoration is very sharp.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the mount are very clear; the maker’s mark has wear and is illegible.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this example of antique Victorian silverware.
