Continental Sterling Silver 'Fish' Snuff/Spice Box - Antique Circa 1890

This exceptional antique European sterling silver box has been realistically modelled in the form of a fish.

This impressive fish shaped box has an articulated body, allowing the fish's position to be customised.

The body of the box is embellished with separate dorsal, pectoral, pelvic and anal fins, in addition to rows of scales, all highlighted with gilded details.

The forked caudal/tail fin is further ornamented with an applied lozenge shaped vacant cartouche to either side.

This antique European piece retains the original hinged cover/head, securing with a hook catch.

The impressive head of the fish is embellished with embossed decoration accented with an applied bead bordered eye and two hooks in the terminal mouth.

This impressive box is supported by the two pelvic fins and lower portion of the caudal/tail fin, allowing the fish to sit securely.

This antique box has a fine colour and patination*.

This articulated box has been independently tested using state of the art technology (Niton XL2 Analyzer) and verified as sterling silver (.925, 925/1000).

* Patination or Patina is a subtle colouration or tarnish which forms on the surface of some metals, produced by oxidation or other chemical processes. A good patina proffers an aesthetically pleasing look.
