Dutch Silver Box - Antique Circa 1890

This exceptional antique Dutch silver box has circular rounded form.

The body of the box is embellished with embossed decoration depicting a village setting depicting a variety of structures accented with trees and fences; it can be determined that the ornamentation was influenced by Flemish/Dutch genre artwork, such as pieces crafted in the late 17th century by David Teniers II.

The ornamentation to the body incorporates a tree clearing forming a large vacant cartouche.

This biscuit box retains the original hallmarked cover encircled with further embossed decoration reflecting the same scenic style as the body and incorporating a male figure dressed in an official uniform attire delivering post to an elegant lady.

The scene to the cover is encompassed with an embossed scalloped border with stylised pendant drop motifs to each incurve, all encircled with a swept border with concave oval ornamentation.

The interior of the box retains the original gilding.

The hallmarks struck to this impressive Dutch silver box include:

Maker's mark: Untraced

Silver quality/purity mark: Lion Passant mark .833 (833/1000)
