French Silver 'Mussel' Vesta Case - Antique Circa 1890

This exceptional antique French silver vesta case has an elongated asymmetrical form, realistically modelled in the form of a mussel shell.

The anterior and posterior surfaces of the vesta case are embellished with engraved decoration replicating the contours of the natural shell.

This fine antique silver vesta case is fitted with a hinged cover to the narrow end of the shell.

The opening of the shell, opposing the tension bearing ligament of the organic shell, features a serrated panel/match striker and loop attachment.

The hallmarks struck to the sleeve of the body include:
