Description

These exceptional antique French silver coasters have a circular rounded shaped form onto a plain spreading foot.

The body of these antique silver bottle coasters are encircled with cast and applied festoon ornamentation, suspended from ribbon bow motifs.

The upper rim of each coaster is embellished with an applied moulded border.

The hallmarks struck to each antique silver coaster include:

Maker's mark: Deux lettres A, surmonté d'un coq/ A rooster above AA (Aundré Aucoc)

Silver quality/purity mark: Minerva mark, 1 (.950, 950/1000)

* The firm of Maison Aucoc was founded in 1877, whereas the legacy of working with silver came from Jean-Baptiste Casimir Aucoc in 1821, who participated in multiple French national exhibits of the early 19th century and won a medal at the Great World Exhibition, London. By 1854 Casimirs successor, Louis, expanded the business and had royal appointments to King Louis Philippe I and Napoleon III. Louis’ son took over the business after his father’s retirement and in 1877 he conjoined his practice with the jewellery firm Lobjois, to make the distinguishable company Maison Aucoc. Focussing on jewellery until 1900, Louis jnr younger brother André took over the company and proceeded to work again on silverware, reviving the legacy of his ancestors.
