This exceptional antique German 800 standard silver and glass claret jug has a cylindrical, tapering and bulbous shaped form.

The cylindrical neck is fitted with an impressive silver mount encircled with a band of embossed scrolling ornamentation above lobed, bright cut engraved stylised leaf decoration.

The mount is fitted with the original hallmarked domed hinged cover embellished with embossed fluted decoration and surmounted to the domed portion by an embossed finial with a bud decorated terminal.

The cover is further ornamented with an impressive bead and scrolling leaf decorated thumbpiece.

This glass claret jug is fitted with a shaped handle with embossed bead ornamentation accented with an applied bead decorated knop to the centre of the handpiece.

The swept lower terminal of the handle is embellished with a collared socket in junction with a supporting band ornamented with further embossed scrolling decoration, identical to that of the upper mount.

The spout is embellished with an impressive embossed leaf to the underside with a lobed motif to the nadir.

The original bulbous glass body of this German jug is embellished with impressive cut glass lozenge decoration in addition to a star cut motif to the underside.

National mark: Crescent moon and crown

This silver and glass claret jug is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The glass is in perfect condition.

The embossed decoration is all very sharp and the bright cut engraved decoration is very crisp.

The German hallmarks struck to the rim of the cover are all very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this fine example of antique glassware.
