Description

This exceptional antique German 900 silver box has a plain rectangular form with rounded corners.

The sides and underside of this enamel box are embellished with engine turned decoration.

The cover is embellished with an impressive hot enamel panel depicting a bi-plane* in flight over an air field, with sparse structures to the horizon; this is a rare and highly desirable scene.

The cover opens to reveal the original gilded interior.

The hallmarks struck to the rim of this antique German silver and enamel box include:

Maker's mark: LK (Louis Kuppenheim)

Silver quality/purity mark: 900 (900/1000)

* This bi-plane reflects the style of aircraft used by Germany in World War I; this has been determined by the horizontal bar to the landing gear.

** This maker operated from circa 1900-1940, this in addition to the style of aircraft determines the date of this piece as circa 1920.
