Indian Silver Peppers by Oomersee Mawjee & Sons - Antique Circa 1890

These exceptional antique silver peppers have a rounded ovoid form onto a pedestal circular spreading foot.

The surface of these 1890's peppers is embellished with finely chased Islamic inspired scrolling coriander-leaf designs all on a matte background; a style typically found in Cutch (Kutch) silver work from the second half of the nineteenth century.

The upper and lower portion of the body is encircled with an impressive large chased leaf decoration; surmounted with a collet style rim.

The upper portion of each screw fit cover is further ornamented with chased arched leaf decoration on a matte background; surmounted with rounded ball style finials.

The lower portion of each cover features a geometric quad diamond design also on a matte background.

The hallmarked circular spreading foot is encircled with further chased arched leaf decoration.

These exceptional antique Indian silver peppers were crafted by the renowned and collectable silversmiths Oomersee Mawjee & Sons*.

* A vast amount of silverware produced in Kutch was crafted by the pre-eminent Indian silversmith Oomersee Mawjee, who was later joined in the profession by his sons. The attention to compact scrollwork superimposed with lively animals is an identifiable mark of his imaginative work.
