An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Indian silver three piece tea service made by Oomersee Mawjee & Sons; an addition to our diverse silver teaware collection

This exceptional antique Indian silver tea service/set consists of a teapot, cream jug and sugar bowl.


Each piece of this service has a globular form onto three volute scrolling feet.


The surface of each piece is embellished with impressive rope bordered bands of profuse, finely chased Islamic inspired scrolling coriander-leaf designs all on a matte background; a style typically found in Cutch (Kutch) silver work from the second half of the nineteenth century.


The upper and lower portion of each body is encircled with an impressive chased arched leaf decorated border.


The teapot and cream jug are each fitted with a domed hinged cover is ornamented with further scrolling leaf decoration and surmounted with the original, exceptional cast silver finial realistically modelled in the form of a squirrel.


The sugar bowl is fitted with domed push fit cover, identical to that of the teapot and cream jug; the covers to the cream jug and sugar bowl indicates the high quality of the service.


The teapot, cream jug and sugar bowl are fitted with angular silver handles embellished with engraved leaf ornamentation to the handpiece.


The teapot has an exceptional swan necked spout ornamented with a continuation of Kutch leaf style decoration.


Each piece is supported by four exceptional cast volute scrolling feet.


This exceptional antique Indian silver tea set was crafted by the renowned and collectable silversmiths Oomersee Mawjee & Sons*.


* A vast amount of silverware produced in Kutch was crafted by the pre-eminent Indian silversmith Oomersee Mawjee, who was later joined in the profession by his sons. The attention to compact scrollwork superimposed with lively animals is an identifiable mark of his imaginative work.

This antique Indian silver tea service is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition.

The chased and cast decoration is very sharp.

The Indian maker's hallmark to the underside of the cream jug and sugar bowl are all very clear; the mark to the underside of the teapot has wear in keeping with age.


Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these pieces of antique silverware.
