Description

This exceptional antique Victorian Irish sterling silver campaign hip flask has a plain tapering, cylindrical form.

The surface of this sterling silver flask is plain and unembellished.

The hip flask is fitted with a plain domed, hinged bayonet cover.

The underside of the flask bears the maker/retailer's mark 'W.Sexton'.

This exceptional flask retains the original leather carrying case with belt straps; these were carried by officers whilst 'in the field' on military campaigns.

The subtly domed cover of the original case bears the engraved initials 'W.L.A'.

This flask has been tested for watertightness and is ready for use.

To ensure the flask remains water tight, the cork should be moist and therefore fully expanded to provide an effective seal.

There are two recommended methods to ensure the cork does not dry out and shrink:

Method One: Keep fluid in the flask at all times, and keep the flask on its side to ensure the cork remains wet.

Method Two: Fill the flask to the brim with fluid and close. Leave it like this over night, or 24 hours if possible, before use.

Date: 1894

Condition

This antique sterling silver flask is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition.

The original case has wear in keeping with age; the hinged portion of the cover has become detached but retains the stitching.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the flask are all clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of Victorian silverware.
