Description

This magnificent and large sterling silver water jug has an inverted baluster, shell shaped form onto a circular spreading foot.

The protruding portion of the body of this impressive antique Irish jug is embellished with chased floral and foliate decoration, forming four arched points.

The lower tapering portion of the body is embellished with conjoined alternating leaf motifs; these vertical formations reflect the paralleling shape of the aforementioned floral spray arrangement.

The neck and spout of this silver jug are embellished with magnificent chased decoration replicating the details of a scallop shell, with a reed decorated border paralleling the upper undulating rim.

The jug is fitted with an exceptional hinged hallmarked cover, comprised of a shaped shell surmounted with an impressive cast finial realistically modelled in the form of stemmed foliage.

This impressive example of antique silverware is fitted with an impressive opposing scroll handle ornamented with a large leaf design emanating from the thumbpiece to the handpiece.

The jug is supported by a compressed knopped pedestal and cast sterling silver foot accented with further nautical textures and foliate motifs.

This magnificent jug, crafted by the renowned Irish silversmith Robert W Smith, is the finest example of its type you could hope to acquire.
