Nathaniel Mills

Nathaniel Mills registered his first mark in 1803, which being a partner in the Jewellers Mills & Langston. His most well-known punch mark was registered at Birmingham Assay Office in 1825, as he concentrated on creating silver on his own.

Mills became on of the most prolific Birmingham box makers, introducing different designs for the time and gaining popularisation for the castle-top silver vinaigrettes and visiting cards of British landmarks.

Upon his death the family business was continued by his sons Nathaniel II, William and Thomas. Between 1840 and 1853 these silversmiths adopted engine turned decoration, casting and stamping to the made collectable pieces successful.

The progression of the family included Nathaniel Mills (III), born in 1810, however this Nathaniel opted not to join the family business or start a silversmith career.
