Newcastle Sterling Silver Quart Mug by Robert Pinkney and Robert Scott II - Antique (1783)

Description

This exceptional and rare antique George III sterling silver mug has a plain tapering cylindrical form onto a circular spreading foot.

The anterior surface of this quart* mug is embellished with a bright cut engraved coat of arms displaying on a chevron between three stag heads, three bugle-horns stringed beneath a crest depicting a dexter arm embowed grasping an arrow.

The lower portion of the body is encircled with a plain girdle.

The mug is fitted with an impressive S scroll handle with a plain thumbpiece; the handle is struck with the maker's mark as to be expected.

The handle is embellished to the upper portion with the contemporary bright cut engraved initials 'PSH'.

This impressive mug was crafted by the renowned Newcastle silversmiths Robert Pinkney and Robert Scott II; due to the limited number of items crafted by these makers in the first instance, fine examples such as this are becoming increasingly scarce.

* Imperial quart = 2 pints/1.14 litres
