Description

These exceptional antique Edwardian Britannia standard* silver sauceboats have an oval rounded form, in a classic English George II style.

The body of each double-pouring piece is plain and embellished with an applied moulded girdle paralleing the shape of the incurved rim.

The applied ornamentation to the shaped rim incorporates a scrolling motif to each elevated point.

Either side of these sauceboats are fitted with cast silver opposing scroll handles featuring a simplified collared design thumbpiece, in addition to a tiered drop design in junction with the flared body.

Each sauceboat has been crafted with a lip to either end, each ornamented with a continuation of applied moulded decoration to the lip and a pendant drop motif to the nadir.

Each example of Edwardian silverware is supported by an impressive stepped oval foot.

The underside of each foot bears the retailer's mark 'Crichton Bros, London & New York', in addition to the full hallmarks.

* Britannia Silver - The Britannia silver standard of 958 (95.84% of fine silver), denoted by the icon of the seated Britannia holding an oval shield, was introduced by William III in 1697. This was to indicate the slightly higher standard of silver from sterling silver standard of 925 (92.5% of fine silver).
