Description

This exceptional antique Russian silver spoon has a large circular bowl onto a shaped stem.

The reverse surface of the large bowl is embellished with cloisonné scrolling and floral designs amidst a band of blue bead decoration using various tones of green, blue, white and red sections of polychrome enamel, all on a matte gilt background.

The enamel segments are encompassed with applied silver paralleling rope twist ornamentation.

The posterior surface of the handle incorporates a lobed knop to the shoulders.

The large spoon terminates with a solomonic/barley-sugar style handpiece, flanked with blue toned Russian cloisonné enamel decorated alternating bead and spindle design, in addition to a tear drop ornamented finial.

The hallmarks to the anterior surface of the stem of this impressive Russian silver spoon include:

Maker's mark: GMH (untraced)

Silver quality/purity mark: 84 (84 zolotniks*)

Kokoshnik Mark: ил** (Иван Сергеевич Лебедкин/Ivan Sergeyevich Lebedkin, Moscow)

* 84 zolotniki is equivalent to 875/1000 or .875 standard silver

** This variation of the Kokoshnik mark was used from 1896-1908, determining the date of this piece as circa 1905.
