Description


This exceptional antique Russian silver gilt and polychrome cloisonné enamel kovsh* has a boat shaped form.


The surface of this impressive kovsh is embellished with cloisonné scrolling and floral designs amidst bands of bead decoration using various tones of green and blue, in addition to red and white sections of polychrome enamel, all on a matte background.


This antique kovsh is fitted with a scrolling handle with an incurved thumbpiece, featuring a continuation of cloisonné enamel decoration.


This exceptional example of antique silverware retains the original gilding.


The hallmarks to the underside of this impressive silver and enamel kovsh include:

Maker's mark: НЭ (untraced)

Kokoshnik mark: МЛ (untraced)


* A kovsh is a drinking vessel/ladle traditionally used for serving and drinking mead. The originally were crafted in wood until the 19th century when precious metals and enamels were used to create presentation pieces.


** This variation of the Kokoshnik mark was used from 1896-1908, determining the date of this piece as circa 1900.

This antique Russian silver and enamel kovsh is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and exceptional,original condition.

There is some minor loss to the cloisonné enamel in keeping with age and use.

The Russian hallmarks struck to the underside of the base are clear.
