Description

This magnificent antique George I sterling silver beer jug has a plain baluster form onto a circular spreading foot, in the classic English Georgian style.

The body of this impressive antique beer jug is plain and encircled with an applied girdle.

The surface is further ornamented with a large engraved coat of arms depicting to the dexter a saltire engrailed charged with an inescutcheon of a cross, to the sinister a crescent above a boar's head.

This impressive example of Georgian silverware is fitted with an S scroll handle ornamented with a plain scrolling thumbpiece and incurved upper terminal.

The sparrow beak spout of this sterling silver jug is encompassed with a paralleling applied moulded border incorporating a vase-shaped moulding with a drop form to the nadir.

By virtue of its size and style, this versatile jug could be used as a water jug.

This magnificent jug was assayed in London and crafted by the London silversmith Peter Archambo I who was registered with this maker's mark in November 1722; and the date letter 'G' pertains to 1722 and it can be determined due to the hallmarking system this piece was one of the first items of silver created using this maker's mark.

Date: 1722

Condition

This antique beer jug is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition in keeping with age.

The engraved coat of arms is very crisp.

Full British hallmarks struck to the underside of the base are all very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this antique Georgian silverware.
