The pieces of this magnificent and comprehensive antique George V sterling silver straight* flatware service for twelve persons have been crafted in the Fiddle Thread and Shell pattern.


The surface of each handle is embellished with a contemporary bright cut engraved initial 'B'**.


The reverse of each solid silver fork and spoon features a diamond heel.

This impressive service benefits from an extensive range of serving pieces and an additional six table knives and forks; with canteens of this period additional table pieces allowed for more place settings.


The mustard spoon, salt spoons, egg spoons and fruit servers all retain the original gilded interior.


The fundamental pieces of this silver cutlery set, including the impressive serving pieces and knives, have been crafted by the notable silversmiths Mappin & Webb Ltd in 1919; each component of this set will have been crafted in the same year but due to the hallmarking system some pieces bear the date letter 'c' and the others feature 'd'.


The handles of the knives, carving set and nut crackers are filled.


The original sterling silver knife handles of the table and dessert set, in addition to one carving knife, are fitted with replacement stainless steel blades; the second carving knife blade retains the retailer's mark 'Mappin & Webb, Stainless, Sheffield W'.


 

This exceptional comprehensive cutlery set is fitted to the original and impressive mahogany wood four drawer canteen box which feature brass carrying/drawer handles and two walnut veneered hinged doors.


* "Straight" means all the pieces are made by the same maker in the same year.


** The initials to the solid silver pieces can be erased if required.

This antique cutlery service is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition.

The filled handled pieces are in exceptional presentation condition, in keeping with age.

The canteen box has been professionally polished by a cabinet maker.

The original interior of each drawer has some natural wear in keeping with age, but can be considered in presentation condition.

Full hallmarks struck to the reverse of each solid silver piece are all exceptionally clear; hallmarks are deeply struck due to the exceptional gauge of silver.

The hallmarks to each of the filled handles have wear in keeping with the type of handle and age.


Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this fine and impressive canteen.
