Description

The pieces of this magnificent and comprehensive antique Victorian sterling silver straight* flatware set for twelve persons have been crafted in the Fiddle and Thread pattern.

The surface of each handle, excluding the table and dessert knives, is embellished with a contemporary bright cut engraved crest of a dove.

The surfaces of the fundamental and serving pieces are each embellished with thread decoration paralleling the shape of the handle and encompassing the rounded heel.

This Fiddle and Thread flatware set consists of: 87 pieces

Basic Service:
12 Table knives
12 Table forks
12 Soup spoons
12 Dessert knives
12 Dessert forks
12 Dessert spoons
12 Teaspoons
Additional Pieces:
Soup ladle
Pair of sauce ladles

The fundamental pieces of this silver cutlery set and serving peices have been crafted by the London silversmiths Samuel Hayne & Dudley Cater in 1840, apart from the table and dessert knives, which are replacements**; as expected with period flatware crafted in London, this canteen is a superior gauge of silver.

Each component of this set will have been crafted in the same year but due to the hallmarking system some pieces bear the date letter 'D' and the others 'E'.

This exceptional comprehensive sterling silver Fiddle and Thread flatware service is fitted to the original and impressive oak wood lift up lid and two drawer canteen box; this box is an impressive piece of furniture in its own right.

The box is fitted with brass drawer and carrying handles in addition to an oval vacant cartouche to the lid.

The lid and hinged drawer supports are inlayed with paralleling satin wood borders.

One drawer has a vacant and versatile storage compartment to the rear portion.

The interior of each drawer/compartment has been refitted with navy velvet replicating the same appearance as the original covering.

* "Straight" means all the pieces are made by the same maker in the same year.

** Predominately all antique silver canteens have replacement knives as the originals have not stood the test of time.

Date: 1840

Condition

This antique cutlery service is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition.

The canteen box has been professionally polished and is also in presentation condition.

Full hallmarks struck to the reverse of each piece are all very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this fine and impressive Victorian canteen.
