SOLD - Sterling Silver Civic (London City) Medallion - Antique George IV

This fine antique silver gilt London City medallion has a circular form.

The cast sterling silver border is in the form of a laurel and oak decorated wreath.

The anterior face of the medallion is embellished with the engraved London City coat of arms incorporating the Latin motto Domine Dirice Nos (Lord direct us).

Encircling the coat of arms is the engraved inscription 'The Lord Mayor and Sheriffs Committee - G. Woodfall* - 1829'.

The obverse face of this fine medallion displays the engraved inscription 'The Right Honourable John Crowder, Lord Mayor - Wm Heny Richardson Esqr and Thos Ward Esqr - Sheriffs'**

The medallion is fitted with an integrated laurel leaf decorated suspension loop.

The medallion is fitted to the original hinged leatherette presentation case which has a velvet and satin lined interior.

The retailer's mark of Williams Goldsmiths, St Pauls, London is displayed to the interior of the presentation case cover.

* There is a strong probability that G Woodfall refers to George Woodfall, printer and publisher of Debrett's Peerage Vol 1 and Vol 2, 1829.

** The Lord Mayor of London is/was assisted by two sheriffs, both elected by the liverymen representing the 108 City livery companies, ranging from gardeners to gunmakers.

Date: 1829

This unique antique civic medallion is a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent condition.

The presentation case is also in excellent condition in keeping with age, with one hook catch missing.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the medallion are clear.

Reflections in photography may detract from the true representation of this item.

Diameter 6cm/2.3"
