This exceptional antique 18th century sterling silver mounted coconut cup has flared rim and plain waisted pedestal onto a circular domed foot.

The cup retains the original sterling silver mount and hinged strapping system securing the coconut vessel.

The coconut bowl is embellished with four exceptional carved panels depicting a four-masted schooner, a galleon at sea and a scene portraying one of the Anemoi - Boreas standing in a shell with a ship in the background.

The forth panel of the cup incorporates the Sone family* coat of arms below a crest of a demi lion rampant gutty de sang holding in the dexter paw a baton or tipped at the end sable.

Each panel is bordered with a shaped band of chased leaf decoration in addition to the ribbed retaining straps.

The coconut cup is fitted with two fine and impressive applied handles embellished with cast figural ornamentation accented with leaf and bead decoration to the lower portion in addition to scrolling terminals; this handle design reflects the style often associated with early porringers.

The plain domed circular foot is embellished with impressive simplified chased leaf decoration to the lower portion.

This 18th century coconut cup is the finest example to have been included within the AC Silver inventory.

* Further detailed heraldry information is available on request.

Coconut cups were popular in the late 15th and early 16th centuries as it was believed that the shell of the coconut would act as a natural defence against poison. The shells shape and scarcity of the commodity enabled the wealthy to mount the shells in precious metals to allow them to be used as respectable and highly treasured drinking vessels.
