Description

This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver sugar box has been realistically modelled in the form of a pheasant*.

This antique sugar box is embellished with embossed and chased decoration reproducing the details of the bird's plumage and anatomical features.

The upper portion of the hallmarked push fit neck/head allows access to the original hallmarked pierced decorated cover.

The hallmarks struck to the sleeve of the body and surface of the neck include:

Importer's mark: S.N (Soloman Nathan Nyburg)

Silver quality/purity mark: 930**, Lion passant (sterling, 925/1000)

Import date mark: R (1892)

Assay mark: Leopard head (London, England)

Additional mark: F (foreign manufacture mark)

* The bird has been determined as a pheasant due to the characteristics of the body and distinguishable features of a male Himalayan monal pheasant's crest.

** The country of origin hallmarked this item with the standard mark 930 and once imported into Britain the silver purity was tested and hallmarks struck reaffirming the silver is a minimum of sterling standard.

Date: 1892

Condition

This antique sugar box is a very good gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The decoration to this piece is very sharp.

Full hallmarks struck to the sleeve of the body and part hallmarks to the surface of the neck are all very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of Victorian silverware.
