Scottish Sterling Silver Chamber Candlestick - Antique George III (1761)

This exceptional antique George III Scottish sterling silver chamber candlestick (chamberstick) has a plain circular form.

The centre of the plain well is surmounted with a bell shaped capital encircled with an applied girdle in addition to an applied border to the rim.

The rounded border of the sunken well is ornamented with tooled decoration to the rim.

The chamberstick is fitted with a plain subtly chamfered baluster shaped handle with a bifurcating scrolling lower terminal.

The reverse surface of the handle is embellished with the contemporary engraved initials 'SH'.

The underside of the plain well bears the original scratch weight; as to be expected the measured weight has subtly diminished in keeping with age to 9.2 troy ounces.

This antique chamberstick is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition.

Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the well are all very clear; the maker's mark has not been deeply struck and shows signs of wear, but remains legible.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of Georgian silverware.
