Scottish Sterling Silver Desk Inkstand - Antique Victorian (1838)

This exceptional antique Victorian silver desk standish, in sterling standard, has a rectangular shaped form.

The swept surface of this desk standish is plain and unembellished with an impressive, applied scrolling leaf and floral decorated border to the undulating, shaped rim.

This antique hallmarked silver inkstand is supported by four impressive cast bracket style feet embellished with scrolling leaf decoration.

The stand has cast cylindrical receivers to accommodate the two inkpots in addition to a central hallmarked receptacle.

Each receiver is encircled with cast sterling silver layered leaf ornamentation; the receivers secure to the underside with a screw fitment.

The melon shaped central receptacle is surmounted with the original hallmarked sterling silver chamber candlestick.

The candlestick has a shaped circular form with a sunken well encompassed with an shaped band of embossed leaf motifs and surmounted with a plain baluster capital.

The incurved shaped rims of the chamberstick and original sconce are encircled with applied moulded borders.

The two original lobed, inverted baluster shaped glass ink pots retain the original push fit sterling silver collars; the circular shaped collars are embellished with ornamentation reflecting that of the candlestick.

Each glass vessel bears a cut glass star motif to the underside.

This antique Victorian silver desk standish is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The cast and embossed decoration is all very sharp.

There is slight loss to the base of one inkpot; this does not affect the aesthetically pleasing appearance or integrity of the piece.

Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the inkstand and central receiver are all very clear; each piece is not marked as to be expected for Scottish silverware.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these examples of antique glass and silverware.
