Silver Gilt Scent Flask - Antique Victorian (1887)

This exceptional, fine and impressive silver antique scent has been realistically modelled in the form of a fish.

The body of this Victorian novelty fish scent is embellished with separate dorsal and pectoral fins, in addition to rows of crisp chased and engraved scales.

The forked caudal/tail fin is further ornamented with engraved textures replicating the fish's natural features.

This antique silver fish scent flask retains the original hallmarked push fit hinged cover/head, which opens to reveal the corked neck of the flask.

The impressive head of the fish is embellished with engraved decoration and accented with two red gem set eyes.

The exceptional fish scent flask is fitted with a silver gilt trace chain, which connects to the flask via a ring loop terminal; every alternate link in the chain is decorated with rope-style textured decoration.

The exterior surface of the body and cover retains the original gilding.

Date: 1887

This antique Victorian novelty fish scent is an exceptional gauge of silver gilt, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The engraved and chased decoration is very crisp.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the dorsal fin and part hallmarks struck to the underside of the cover are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the superior gauge of silver.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this example of Victorian silverware.
