Description

This fine antique Victorian sterling silver vinaigrette has a rectangular form modelled in the form of a book.

The anterior and posterior surfaces of the silver vinaigrette are embellished with fine and impressive bright cut engraved scrolling leaf decoration.

The decoration to the anterior surface incorporates a central shaped scroll bordered cartouche displaying the contemporary engraved initials ‘ES’.

The hinged side of the box is embellished with a ribbed design to replicate the book’s spine binding.

The remaining three sides of the box feature subtle engraved horizontal lines depicting the pages of the book.

The hinged silver vinaigrette cover allows access to the hinged pierced decorated silver gilt grille.

The vinaigrette has a gilded interior.

Date: 1854

Condition

This antique vinaigrette is a very good gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition.

The bright cut engraved decoration is very crisp.

Full hallmarks struck to the interior of the cover and base are all very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from this fine example of Victorian silverware.
