Description


This exceptional antique William IV sterling silver butter dish has a circular tapering form modelled in the form of a wooden milk bucket.


The body of the silver dish is fitted with a fully hallmarked push fit cover surmounted with a large and original hallmarked cast sterling silver finial depicting a bull.


The cover is embellished with a continuation of the tooled decoration from the body and incorporates the contemporary engraved inscription North East Society of Ireland and 'Adjudged to Sir Robt Bateson, Bart, For the best pair of working Bulls or Oxen at the Autumn Show, 1831'.


The dish is fitted with a pair of angular handles with inset oval handpieces; the cover has shaped sides to accommodate the protruding handles.


The dish sits on the original hallmarked sterling silver plate.


The plate is embellished with further tooled stave decoration to a plain circular well.


This impressive dish is fitted with an impressive glass liner.


The dish and serving plate were crafted by the renowned London silversmith Charles Thomas Fox.

Condition


This antique dish is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The tooled and engraved decoration is all very crisp.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the dish, underside of the plate and interior of the cover, in addition to part hallmarks to the finial are all very clear.


Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of antique silverware.
