Sterling Silver Candlesticks - Antique William III

Description

These exceptional antique William III English sterling silver candlesticks have a cylindrical form onto a spreading octagonal base.

The circular capitals have fixed sconces encircled with embossed convex fluted decoration.

The lower portion of the impressive Corinthian columns are encompassed with a spreading knop ornamented with embossed fluted decoration in a swirl design.

Each octagonal swept base is embellished with further decoration identical to that of the knop.

These antique candlesticks do not have weighted bases; this style of candlestick often has a square cut cornered base, these candlesticks feature a desirable octagonal shaped base.

These exceptional examples of 17th century silverware have fine colour and patination*.

Such original period candlesticks, in this condition, are becoming increasingly difficult to locate.

* Patination or Patina is a subtle colouration or tarnish which forms on the surface of some metals, produced by oxidation or other chemical processes. A good patina proffers an aesthetically pleasing look.

NOTE: After surviving the Great Fire of London the records at the London Assay office were destroyed by fire in 1681; their catalogues and documentation began again in 1697. The London Assay Office have continued the efforts to further locate 16th and 17th century silversmiths, and it has been determined that there is a possibility the maker is Daniel Beverly, a freeman of the Haberdashers who became part of the Goldsmiths Company in 1672.

Date: 1694

Condition

These rare candlesticks are an excellent gauge of silver and excellent quality for their type.

There are some minor surface blemishes, in keeping with age, and these impressive candlesticks can be considered to be in exceptional condition.

Full hallmarks struck to the underside of one base are very clear in keeping with age; full hallmarks to the other have some wear but remain legible.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these examples of William III silverware.
