Sterling Silver Canteen of Cutlery for Six Persons - Antique Victorian (1894)

£3,245.00

An exceptional, fine and impressive, rare antique Victorian English sterling silver Triton pattern flatware service for six persons; an addition to our dining silverware collection

SKU A8710

The pieces of this exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver flatware service for six persons have been crafted in Triton pattern.

The anterior surface of each handle terminal is embellished with an illustration of the Greek God Triton holding a trident with a sea shell to his shoulder and standing over a cornucopia*; often this pattern references the Roman God equivalent and is referred to as Hanoverian Feather Edge Neptune Top.

Each spoon and fork handle is further ornamented with feather edge decoration to the stem.

The reverse surface of each component is plain and unembellished apart from the full hallmarks and registration number '200844'.

Each spoon has a rounded heel to the reverse of the bowl.

This impressive straight** service consists of 31 pieces:

Basic Service
6 Table forks
6 Dessert forks
6 Table spoons
6 Dessert spoons
6 Teaspoons
Additional Pieces
Sauce ladle

Each item of this impressive and very rare canteen has been crafted by William Gibson & John Lawrence Langman of Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co. in 1894.

This flatware service can be purchased with knives if so desired, due to the rarity of the pattern Neptune Top/Triton knives are not available but an alternative pattern can be arranged; for further information please contact Andrew Campbell directly.

This antique sterling silver cutlery set is supplied in felt cutlery rolls; which not only protect the items in storage but significantly reduces tarnishing.

* The cornucopia is also known as the 'horn of plenty' and represents bounty.

** "Straight" means all the pieces are made by the same maker in the same year.
