This exceptional antique George V sterling silver presentation key has a rounded shaped bow (handle) to a knopped shaft and rectangular toothed bit.

Each side of the shaped bow/terminal to the key is embellished with a pierced scrolling decoration accented with scrolling leaf and bead ornamentation to the lower portion.

The shaped cartouche to the anterior surface of the key bears the engraved inscription 'Presented to Alderman Gilbert Oliver J.P. to commemorate the opening of the Holy Jesus Hospital, Newcastle, Oct 8th 1937'.

The reverse surface of the bow is vacant.

The plain cylindrical shaft is encircled with bead decoration and plain knops.

This impressive key terminates with a plain cylindrical tip and decorative geometrically cut bit.

The key retains the original gilding.

The key is fitted to the original hinged leatherette presentation box with satin and velvet lined interior, securing with a push fit catch.

The interior of the box bears the retailer's mark 'Watchmakers to the Admiralty, EstD 1870, Grant & Son, Goldsmiths & Diamond Merchants, North Shields, South Shields, Jarrow-on-Tyne, Sunderland, Carlisle'.

Date: 1924

This antique presentation key is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition.

The original gilding has wear in keeping with age and handling.

The 20x magnification of the camera lens increases the appearance of natural black marks and blemishes to the detailing, which visually is not noticeable to the naked eye.

Full hallmarks struck to the reverse of the key are all very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of antique silverware.

Length 10cm/3.9"
