Description


This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver christening mug has a circular rounded shaped form onto a circular spreading foot.


The lower portion of the mug is embellished with chased batwing ornamentation below a convex girdle accented with chased scrolling leaf decoration.


The upper portion has an impressive band of chased floral motifs and scrolling leaf bordered cherub masks, further accented with spreading leaves all on a textured backgorund.


The decoration to the upper portion incorporates a scrolling leaf bordered vacant cartouche.


This boxed silver christening mug is fitted with a fine and impressive opposing scroll handle ornamented with a leaf decorated thumbpiece.


The circular spreading foot is embellished with an egg decorated border to the outer edge.


This impressive antique christening mug was crafted by the renowned London silversmiths William Gibson & John Lawrence Langman of Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co and bears the retailer’s mark 'Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company, 112 Regent St' to the underside.


This mug is fitted to the original hinged leatherette presentation box with satin and velvet lined interior, securing with a push fit catch.


The interior of the box bears the retailer’s mark 'Manufacturing Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company. 112.Regent St London'.

Condition


This antique boxed silver christening mug is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The piece has been professionally polished and is in presentation condition.

The box is in excellent presentation condition.

The chased decoration is very sharp.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the mug are all very clear; the hallmarks are deeply struck due to the exceptional gauge of silver.


Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this example of Victorian silverware.
