SORRY ITEM SOLD

This exceptional antique sterling silver cigar box has a plain rectangular form.

The swept sides of this impressive antique George V cigar box are plain and unembellished, apart from applied reed decorated borders to the upper and lower rims.

This example of antique silverware is fitted with a hallmarked hinged solid silver cover ornamented to the centre with a contemporary bright cut engraved Coldstream Guards* regimental badge; the badge consists of a eight pointed Guards star paralleling the garter displaying the notable motto 'Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense' - Evil to those who evil thinks** in addition to the cross of St. George.

The cover opens to reveal the original gilding to the interior, in addition to the contemporary engraved military inscription 'To J. G. Fortescue from, Officers of Coldstream Guards on the occasion of his marriage.'***, followed by a list of the individual officers ranks and names.

The body of this exceptional box is fitted with the original cedar wood lining and adjustable dividers; the previous owners of the box attached the elucidating cigar labels 'Turkish' and 'Virginian' to two of the compartments - these labels can be removed upon request.

This sterling silver box has a weighted base and retains the original red leatherette covering to the underside.

This exceptional cigar box bears the retailer's mark 'Asprey, London'.

By virtue of its size this versatile officer's box could be used for a multitude of functions.

NOTE: The majority of such boxes have a wood lining to the cover; it is a sign of quality when boxes have an unlined, solid silver covers.

* The Coldstream Guards is a part of the Foot Guards regiment of the British Army since 1650 and is the oldest regiment to remain in active service.

** This garter and motto can also be found surrounding the shield of the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom.

*** 2nd Lieutenant J. G. Fortescue was noted to have survived the 3rd Battalion with shell shock.
