This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver claret jug has a bulbous rounded knopped form onto an inverted bell shaped foot.

The swept neck of the jug is embellished with vertical panels accented with an applied collar to the upper portion, supporting floral motifs and conjoined to a large cast grotesque mask design to the underside of the lip.

The body of the jug is embellished with bright cut engraved fruiting vine ornamentation accented with foliate designs, tendrils and suspended grape clusters.

The body of this impressive claret jug is further ornamented with an evolute scrolling border to the upper portion.

The decoration to the main portion of the body incorporates a large chased decorated quatrefoil shaped cartouche ornamented with a contemporary bright cut engraved coat of arms featuring between a chevron charged with three annulets, three eagles displayed and surmounted with a crest depicting an arrow point downwards.

The shaped rim to the lip of the jug is embellished with an applied moulded border.

The jug retains the original hallmarked cover surmounted with an exceptional cast gourd and foliate shaped finial.

This impressive jug is fitted with an exceptional cast opposing scroll handle with a large scrolling leaf design incorporated into the elevated thumbpiece.

The upper socket of the handle is ornamented with further leaf decoration, with ribbed bifurcating terminals and a grape cluster design.

The inverted bell shaped foot is embellished with impressive chased decoration depicting floral motifs within matte background filled panels, accented with horizontal ribbed decoration, all above chased convex flutes.

The interior of the jug and cover, including the finial, retain the original gilding.

This exceptional sterling silver claret jug was crafted by the renowned London silversmith Joseph Angell II.

This antique claret jug is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

This jug has been professionally cleaned and is ready for use.

The bright cut engraved decoration is all very crisp and the chased ornamentation is very sharp.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the neck and part hallmarks to the interior of the cover are very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.
