Description

This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver communion set consists of a chalice, paten and wine jug.

The surface of each ecclesiastical piece is embellished with fine and impressive engraved inverted scalloped borders accented with simplified fleur-de-lis style motifs to each point and panels of matte textured ornamentation.

The body of the jug and chalice are encircled with impressive arched motifs incorporating large tri-lobed leaf designs.

The chalice has a circular tapering form onto a knopped pedestal and hexafoil spreading foot.

The interior of the chalice retains the original gilding.

The paten has a plain circular form with a central circular well embellished with a cross-flory design amidst a simplified inverted scalloped border.

The impressive wine jug has a baluster shaped form to a circular spreading foot.

The aforementioned ornamentation incorporates applied girdles, in addition to a plain applied moulded border to the upper rim.

The underside of the spout is embellished with a fleur-de-lis design accented with a matte texture.

The jug bears an angular handle with a scrolling lower terminal and is fitted with the original sterling silver and cork push fit stopper, surmounted with an impressive cross pattée* decoration finial.

This antique silver communion set is fitted to the original hinged leatherette box with velvet and satin interior and securing with a push fit catch.

This exceptional set was crafted by the London silversmiths Sidney Blunt & Frederick Dendy Wray of Blunt, Wray & Co.

** A cross pattee (pattée, patty) is also known as a cross formée.
