Description

These exceptional antique George III sterling silver candlesticks have Corinthian columns to a square swept base to a collet style rim.

The cast and pierced decorated Corinthian capital of each candlestick retains the original hallmarked detachable push fit sconce.

Each cast sterling silver sconce is ornamented with a band of oval ornamentation to the rim, incorporating a lobed design to each corner.

The surface of each sconce bears the contemporary bright cut engraved crest of a naked arm embowed holding a branch of laurel, within a garter bearing the motto 'Sub Libertate Quietem' - Peace Only Under Liberty*.

The swept portions of the bases are ornamented with embossed cascading festoon designs emanating from an oval medallion depicting a male's portrait to each side.

The bases are further embellished with further bands of oval ornamentation, the lower portion bearing a lobed leaf design to each corner.

These antique silver candlesticks have weighted bases, as to be expected, and are fitted with green baize to the underside.

* This crest pertains to the 2nd Baronet, Sir William Burrell (1732-1796).

Condition

These Corinthian column candlesticks are an exceptional gauge of silver and exceptional quality for their type.

The candlesticks are in excellent presentation condition.

There are a few minor dings to the columns as to be expected with such original examples and in keeping with age.

The embossed decoration is very sharp and the bright cut engraved crest is crisp.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the rim of each base are all very clear, in keeping with age and location; the part hallmarks to each sconce sleeve have wear but remain legible.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these pieces of antique silverware.
