Sterling Silver, Electroplated Silver and Antler Carving and Fish Server Set - Antique Victorian (1887)

Description

This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver mounted and antler handled carving and fish serving set consists of two carving knives, two carving forks, a sharpening steel and a pair of fish servers.

The fine and impressive plain steel blades of the carving knives have a plain pointed form, incorporating the retailer’s mark Walker & Hall, Sheffield to the anterior surface.

The electroplated blade to the fish knife and the fish fork both have a broad incurved shaped form.

The fish servers have fine and impressive bright cut engraved scrolling leaf decorated borders, each incorporating a simplified floral spray and reed design, in addition to foliate festoon bordered shaped cartouche.

The cartouche to the knife depicts the illustration of a stork/crane in flight and the cartouche to the fork remains vacant.

The posterior surface of each shaped fish server blade is plain and embellished with a paralleling simple border to the incurved edge.

Each piece of this antique silver carving set is fitted with a shaped antler handle featuring an impressive hallmarked sterling silver embossed leaf decorated terminal.

All the components retain the hallmarked sterling silver ferrules ornamented with a broad band of embossed leaf ornamentation, replicating the design to the terminal.

This service is fitted to the fine and impressive original hinged oak wood presentation box with a blue velvet and buttoned satin lined interior.

The interior of the box bears the retailer's mark 'Watchmaker, & Jeweller R. Drummond, 122.Buchanan St Glasgow'.

The box is fitted with the original brass fittings and ornamented with the original satin wood stringing to the cover, in addition to a vacant shield shaped cartouche to the cover.

Condition

This antique carving set is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

There is some discolouration to the steel blades and natural wear to the handles, to be expected with age and use, but can be considered to be in presentation condition.

The original presentation box has been professionally polished by a cabinet maker.

There is some discolouration to the interior rim of the box, this does not detract from the aesthetically pleasing appearance.

The embossed decoration is very sharp and the bright cut engraved decoration is very crisp.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of each mount and ferrule are all very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these fine examples of Victorian silverware.
