Description

This exceptional antique George V sterling silver flatware service for twelve persons is comprised of dessert knives, dessert forks, fish knives and fish forks.

The dessert knives have plain pointed blades and the fish knives have a broad rounded shaped form; each fork has four tines.

Each piece of this sterling silver fish and dessert service is fitted with the original Louis XVI pattern handle*.

The exceptional antique silver dessert service is fitted to the fine and impressive original hinged canteen box with a lift up lid and lift out tray.

The interior of the box retains the original velvet and satin lining; the interior of the cover bears the retailer's mark 'By Appointment, Mappin & Webb Ltd, Oxford Street, London, W'.

This impressive canteen box is ornamented with brass fittings, including a shaped cartouche bearing the contemporary engraved initials 'IC' and escutcheon, which retains the original key for the working locking mechanism.

The fish service is fitted to a lift out drawer from a full canteen box**; the dessert service would have accompanied the full canteen box. These pieces are a segment of a more extensive flatware service; through time the service will have been divided.

* Louis XVI pattern bears similarities to Louis Seize pattern due to the reed and ribbon borders and foliate ornamentation, however it can be considered as less ornate. This is a private pattern by Mappin & Webb Ltd.

** If preferred this antique silver fish service could be supplied in felt cutlery rolls; which not only protect the items in storage but significantly reduces tarnishing.
