Description

This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver four piece tea and coffee service consists of a coffee pot, teapot, sugar bowl and cream jug.

Each piece has a circular urn shaped form onto a circular spreading pedestal foot.

The pieces of this impressive antique silver tea and coffee set are encircled with fine and impressive bright cut engraved undulating bands to the upper portion, accented with foliate and floral garlands suspended from oval floral motifs to the centre.

The decoration to each piece incorporates a contemporary bright cut engraved crest depicting an arm grasping a single arrow.

The body of the cream jug is embellished with an applied moulded girdle.

The upper rim and foot of each piece are encompassed with an applied bead decorated border.

The teapot and coffee pot are fitted with flush hinged hallmarked covers which retain the original silver urn style finials; the flush hinge indicates the exceptional quality of this service.

Both covers are embellished with bands of bright cut engraved decoration identical to that of the bodies.

The coffee pot and teapot are fitted with impressive swan necked spouts, each embellished with bright cut engraved simplified floral and foliate decoration in addition to a single undulating borders paralleling the socket and lip.

The components of this set are fitted with impressive angular handles embellished with further bright cut engraved undulating borders and ornamented with an impressive applied figural mask and scroll designs to the lower sockets.

This exceptional antique silver tea and coffee set was crafted by the renowned London silversmiths John, Edward, Walter & John Barnard of Barnard & Sons Ltd in 1873; these items will have been crafted in the same year but due to the hallmarking system the cream jug is struck with the date letter ‘s’ and the other pieces bear ‘r’.

Date: 1873

Condition

This impressive antique service is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The bright cut engraved decoration to each piece is very crisp and the applied ornamentation is very sharp.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of each piece and part hallmarks to the interior of each cover are all very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these examples of Victorian silverware.
