This fine antique George III sterling silver stirrup cup has been realistically modelled in the form of a fox's head.
The surface of this original cup is embellished with impressive chased decoration reproducing the fine features of the fox’s snarling facial features and fur.
The underside of the fox’s jaw features a convex oval cartouche bearing the contemporary engraved motto ‘Venationi Dattr’*.
The anterior of the rim is encompassed with a reed decorated border.
The interior surface of the rim bears the contemporary engraved presentation inscription ‘The gift of Rob.t Moreton Wood to Will Skelhorne, 16th Dec 1801’.
This exceptional fox head stirrup cup retains the original gilded interior.
Georgian stirrup cups modelled in the form of a fox’s head are rare to the market and highly desirable.
* This motto is constructed from the Latin word for hunting - ‘Venatio’.
