Description

The pieces of this magnificent, antique sterling silver gilt canteen of cutlery* have been crafted in the Chased and Pierced Vine pattern.

The pierced decorated handle of each piece is embellished with impressive grape and vine leaf chased decoration, extending across the stem and terminal.

The posterior surface of each piece incorporates a vacant cartouche to the terminal.

Each piece of this exceptional antique silver flatware set retains the original gilding; this has some slight wear in keeping with age and in a sympathetic fashion.

This silver gilt canteen of cutlery consists of 97 pieces:

Basic Service:
18 Dessert knives
18 Dessert forks
18 Dessert spoons
18 Ice-cream spoons
18 Teaspoons
Additional Pieces:
2 Pairs of grape shears
Pair of fruit serving spoons
Ice-cream / Pastry server
Sifter ladle
Sauce ladle

The service benefits from knives fitted with the original hallmarked solid silver gilt blades; as expected the handles are filled.

The components of this antique canteen were crafted by the renowned London silversmiths Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co Ltd in 1910.

This exceptional silver gilt cutlery service is fitted to an impressive mahogany wood lift up lid and three tray canteen box, which features fine and impressive brass carrying handles to either side.

Each lift out tray and the interior of the well is fitted with the original green velvet fitment.

The satin interior to the cover bears the retailer's mark 'By appointment to the King, The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd, 112, Regent St London W'.

NOTE: * Due to the quantity of place settings this extensive dessert service could be portioned to include a table service and utilised as a canteen of cutlery for nine persons.

Condition

This vine pattern silver gilt cutlery service is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The Chased and Pierced Vine pattern decoration is very sharp.

Full hallmarks struck to the reverse surface of each spoon bowl and fork tines, in addition to the knife blades are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this fine and impressive canteen.
