Description

This fine antique George I sterling silver toy* chamber candlestick (chamberstick) has a plain circular form.

The sunken well is plain and unembellished apart from the lion passant hallmark.

The centre of the plain well is surmounted with a cylindrical capital with an applied border around the rim.

This miniature chamberstick is fitted with a plain broad baluster shaped handle accented with a subtle rib design and a shaped terminal.

The reverse surface of the handle has been stuck with the maker's mark ‘DC’**.

This chamberstick could be used with a taper candle if so desired.

*The word toy encompasses a variety of pieces reflecting the same proportions and design features as the original examples. Originally such pieces were either collected by adults, or played with by children as genuine toys.

**David Clayton was a London silversmith renowned for producing miniatures and toys. Extants of his work may be seen in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Condition

This early Georgian miniature chamberstick is a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in exceptional presentation condition.

The lion passant and maker's hallmarks are both very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this fine example of Early Georgian silverware.
