Description

This exceptional pair of antique Victorian sterling silver fish servers consists of a serving knife and fork, crafted in the Newton pattern.

The blade of the knife and the drop of the fork have a rounded shaped form; the fork features four tines.

The anterior and posterior surface of the knife is embellished with pierced and bright cut engraved scrolling leaf ornamentation paralleling the shape of the blade, accented with a segmented palmette design to the lower portion.

The drop of the fork is ornamented with further pierced and bright cut engraved scrolling leaf designs, reflecting the same design as the knife blade.

These boxed sterling silver fish servers are fitted with fine and impressive hallmarked sterling silver handles, ornamented with embossed scrolling leaf and palmette designs, all on a matte background.

These antique fish servers are fitted to the impressive original hinged leatherette box with satin and velvet lined interior.

These exceptional Newton pattern servers have been crafted by the collectable, renowned silversmith and flatware maker George Adams of Chawner & Co; the pieces will have been crafted in fewer year but due to the hallmarking system the handles are is struck with the date letter 't' (1874) and the blades bear 'A' (1876).

Condition

These antique boxed sterling silver fish servers are an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The embossed ornamentation is very sharp and the bright cut engraved decoration is very crisp.

The exterior of the box is in presentation condition and the interior has wear in keeping with age; the push fit catch is deficient.

Full hallmarks struck to the reverse of each blade and handle are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these pieces of Victorian silverware.
