Sterling Silver Porringer - Antique James II (1685)

Description

This exceptional antique James II sterling silver porringer has a circular rounded form.

The lower portion of this 17th century silver porringer is embellished with chased alternating foliate decoration emanating from the base.

The upper portion is encircled with an impressive chased leaf festoon design.

This antique silver porringer is fitted with two cast silver S scroll handles, accented with scrolling thumbpieces.

The underside of the porringer features the engraved initials 'IS', in additional to the original silversmith's centre punch mark.

NOTE: After surviving the Great Fire of London the records at the London Assay office were destroyed by fire in 1681; their catalogues and documentation began again in 1697. However it can be pertained through further research that the attributed maker is possibly William Middleston, who declared a similar style Britannia standard mark in the 1660s.

Condition

This antique sterling silver porringer is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The cast and chased decoration is very sharp and the engraved initials have wear in keeping with age and use.

The hallmarks struck to the surface of the porringer are very clear in keeping with age and location; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.
