This magnificent antique Victorian sterling silver preserve dish has a circular rounded form onto a collet style foot.

The body of the dish is embellished with exceptionally finely chased and applied decoration depicting figures drinking, conversing and supporting each other in an outdoor tavern setting; it can be determined that the ornamentation was influenced by Flemish/Dutch genre artwork, such as pieces crafted in the late 17th century by David Teniers II.

This impressive preserve dish is fitted with a fully hallmarked push fit cover surmounted with the large and original figural finial displaying a male character perched on a brewery cask with both arms elevated; the finial secures to the interior of the cover with a wing nut.

The cover is encircled with further chased decoration featuring a continuation of the outdoor inn scene from that of the body.

The rim of the cover is encompassed with an applied shaped opposing scrolling leaf decorated border incorporating five large leaf designs.

The dish sits on the original hallmarked sterling silver plate.

The plate is embellished with contemporary engraved initials 'IEM' in addition to an applied border to the rim, matching the same design to that of the cover.

This large dish is fitted with an impressive cranberry coloured glass liner.

The plain collet style foot of the dish bears the retailer's mark M. Emanuel, London.

This is a magnificent example of Victorian silverware and is the finest of its type you could hope to locate.

Date: 1848

This antique dish is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The chased and applied decoration is all very sharp.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the dish, underside of the plate and interior of the cover are all very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of Victorian silverware.
