English Silver Tankard

Sterling Silver Quart Tankard - Antique Georgian (1770)

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Georgian English sterling silver quart tankard; an addition to our range of collectable early 18th century silverware

Maker: Unknown

SKU C5404

This exceptional antique George III sterling silver tankard has a plain baluster form onto a spreading circular foot.

The body of this Georgian tankard is encircled with a plain girdle and embellished with impressive later chased scrolling leaf ornamentation accented with floral sprays; as often the case with this type of piece, the chasing will have been implemented during the Victorian period.

The ornamentation to the tankard incorporates a large shaped vacant cartouche encompassed with a scroll decorated border.

This antique English silver tankard retains the original domed hallmarked cover surmounted with an impressive cast silver scrolling thumbpiece, incorporating a heart motif to the centre.

The cover is ornamented with further later chased floral decoration, in addition to bands of tooled decoration to the rim.

This antique sterling silver tankard is fitted with an opposing scroll handle ornamented with a volute scrolling, ridged terminal.

The hinge is decorated with cast pendant drop style ornamentation in junction with the upper portion of the handle.

The spreading collet foot is encircled with a band of applied moulded decoration to the rim.

The interior of the tankard and cover feature the later gilding.

* Imperial quart = 2 pints/1.14 litres
