George V Tea Caddy

Sterling Silver Tea Caddy - Antique George V (1925)

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique English George V sterling silver tea caddy; an addition to our antique silver teaware collection

SKU C3910

SORRY ITEM SOLD

This exceptional antique George V sterling silver tea caddy has a rectangular form.

The opposing surfaces of the tea caddy are embellished with embossed ornamentation depicting two contrasting intricate scenes, each displaying a family gathering at leisure.

The remaining two sides are ornamented with embossed scrolling leaf decoration surrounding a vacant oval cartouche, with a winged cherub-style mask to the upper portion; all on a matte background.

The upper rim of the caddy is encompassed with an applied bead decorated border.

The domed upper portion of the caddy is ornamented with further embossed decoration, featuring cherub masks, fruit arrangements and fleur-de-lis motifs.

The impressive George V tea caddy is fitted with the original hallmarked, oval push fit cover, surmounted with a knopped finial and encircled with further embossed scrolling leaf decoration.

The moulded rim to the lower portion of the caddy body accommodates the original detachable hallmarked, sliding plateaued base; this is a fine feature of the piece.

NOTE: Tea canisters/caddies in this style were fitted with a domed cover suitable for measuring tea in addition to a sliding base or top to facilitate filling. The sliding base would also enable a lead liner to be inserted, which would keep the tea fresh for longer.
