Description

This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver vinaigrette has a rectangular incurved shaped form.

The cover of this Victorian vinaigrette is embellished with a simplified bright cut engraved illustration depicting Scott Monument*.

The base of the box is ornamented with bright cut engraved hexagonal pattern accented with a central scroll bordered cartouche displaying the contemporary inscription 'ANA to JB' .

The rounded shaped sides of the base are encompassed with bright cut engraved scrolling leaf designs continuing to the rim of the cover.

The anterior surface of the cover is further ornamented with an impressive scrolling thumbpiece.

The hallmarked hinged silver vinaigrette cover allows access to the original hinged pierced decorated gilt grille.

This fine vinaigrette retains the original gilded interior.

This impressive vinaigrette is an exceptional example of its type.

* The impressive and gothic monument was erected in honour of the Scottish author Sir Walter Scott in Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh. Crafted in Binny sandstone and with a towering height of 200ft 6", it is the largest monument dedicated to a writer in the world.

Date: 1857

Condition

This Victorian vinaigrette is an exceptional gauge of silver for its type, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition.

The bright cut engraved decoration is all very crisp.

There are some signs of wear to the gilding of the interior, in keeping with age.

Full hallmarks to the interior of the vinaigrette are all very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from this fine example of Victorian silverware.
